In this project we propose the valorisation of biomass of by-products of the cereal industry and the olive oil industry, to obtain antioxidants and polyphenols, as a preliminary step to the fractionation to obtain hemicelluloses and C5 sugars, C6 sugars, and lignin that is being developed in other projects of the group. The specific objectives are specified in:

  1. Obtaining bound ferulic acid from wheat and oats, using fractionation and selective hydrolysis processes with pressurized hot water, pressurized hydroalcoholic mixtures and supercritical water.
  2. Identify the best raw material and sequence of stages to maximize the amount of extracted ferulic acid, combining with process intensification technologies such as ultrasounds and microwaves.
  3. Study the effect of this stage of extraction of ferulic acid on the polysaccharide chains of cereal biomass (pectins, hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin) to integrate it into a biorefinery that uses cereal bran as a raw material.
  4. Extraction of polyphenols from byproducts of olive oil processing by extraction promoted by microwaves. Select the pretreatment technique and optimal operating conditions that lead to maximum performance and selectivity.
  5. Develop the process based on the technique selected in objective 4 at the pilot / demonstration scale using a continuous microwave oven.
