Improving the bioavailability of quercetin with novel nanocarriers

Quercetin is a flavonoid with strong antioxidant activity, found in many fruits and vegetables. The promising pharmaceutical applications of quercetin are hindered by the low bioavailability of this compound. This limitation can be overcome with an appropriate formulation, designed to improve the solubility of quercetin in gastrointestinal fluids and to protect the compound from degradation. This project presents a multidisciplinary approach for the development of micellar formulations of quercetin using carrier materials with surfactant properties, performed in cooperation by the High Pressure Processes Group of the University of Valladolid, the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of the University of Salamanca, Institute of Experimental Biology and Technology (iBET), and the innovation-based company Bio In-Ren. The micellar formulations in aqueous phase will be prepared applying the supercritical fluid extraction of emulsions process (SFEE) patented by the High Pressure Processes Group. The bioavailability of the prepared formulations will be characterized with in-vitro and in-vivo assays, and finally the possible therapeutic activity of the compound will be evaluated.
